X70 opens up SUV market for Proton
Proton Holdings Bhd is set to tap into the sport utility vehicle SUV market in Malaysia and fuel its sales growth in the years ahead.
Proton Edar Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa said currently the SUV segment of the automotive market in the country was still small. This presents opportunities for Proton's growth into the segment via the introduction of the X70.
"At present, the ratio of the SUV segment in Malaysia to other cars is huge. For every 10 cars sold, one is a SUV in developing markets such as China and Malaysia. When you compare that in North America, with every 10 cars sold, four are SUVs.
"On the global market scenario, this means there is great potential for Proton’s X70 to take advantage in the domestic market," he said at a briefing to 45 participants of the Miss Tourism International (MTI) during their visit to Proton Centre of Excellence (COE) here today.
On Wednesday, Proton officially launched its first premium SUV, the X70 which is retailed from RM99,800 to RM123,800.
The highly anticipated model finally made its debut in the local automotive market after much talk for about year.
It comes in four variants, Standard 2WD at RM99,800; Executive 2WD at RM109,800; Executive AWD and Premium 2WD at between RM115,800 and RM123,800.
The X70 is the first model jointly produced by Proton and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd and is said to be the first premium SUV fully-manufactured here.
The X70 is powered by an 1.8 liter turbo-charged TGDI engine with six automatic speeds, capable of splitting the power of 184 PS at 5,500rpm and torque of 285Nm from 1,700-4,400rpm.
