Top 5 Malaysian Bands That You Need to Know

Listening and watching live music performances in Malaysia is one of the most enjoyable experiences to make your travels fun and unique. Did you know that there are many Malaysian rock bands who make awesome music and put on amazing live gigs? Check out these best Malaysian rock bands that boost the local music scene.

1. Hujan

As one of Malaysia’s iconic rock bands, loved by fans young and old, Hujan has been on the local and international music scene for more than a decade. Hujan is a Malaysian rock band formed in 2005 by lead singer and guitarist Noh Salleh. The band's current lineup consists of Noh Salleh (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist), AG Coco (lead guitarist, backing vocals), Izzat Uzaini (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Azham Ahmad (drums). Fans of Hujan are dubbed as the Raingers

The band began forming after Noh uploaded some of his demos to Myspace. Despite the lack of love from certain quarters at the early stage of the band, Hujan has the most successful breakthrough music in Malaysia. Hujan never disappointed their fans with their exploration of various musical style and genres from indie-alternative, acoustic-rock, punk-rock, pop-rock, hard-rock, and metal.

2. Masdo

A band recently formed on early 2015 with the name “The Lipstick”, the band rebranded to Masdo after rearranging their members and focused on the revival of the 60’s genre that manages to catch many ears listening to their music.  It only takes one catchy song to put Masdo as one of the most significant indie band in Malaysia, and that was “Bunga”. The song hits the right notes and with a genre that gives a nostalgic feeling towards new indie listeners, Masdo reminds us so much of Datuk A. Rahman Hassan, The Beach Boys, and Ahmad Daud. With the pursuit of bringing back the twist era, Masdo might be very likely to succeed in the current scene of our music industry.

The band's current lineup consists of Ali Sariah ( lead vocalist, rythm guitar), Asmawi ( lead guitar), Putu Ceri ( bass guitar), and Azham Ahmad from Hujan band ( drummer)

3. Butterfingers

In 1991, a group of students at Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), which included Loque, Kadak and Kalai (who joined the band soon after their drummer left), formed a band called Loque's Tail. Producing their own material, the band was heavily influenced by Metallica. Later, the grunge genre was making waves in Malaysia and Loque's Tail decided to have a change in their musical direction from metal to grunge and punk.

During their English language era, the band's primary lyricist was Emmett, while Loque was the primary songwriter throughout the band's conception. Often attributed for their live performances, the band rarely perform in large venues such as arenas and amphitheaters. Instead, they regularly play smaller venues. Loque once said in an interview, "We're definitely a live band. That's what it's all about for us. We make records so we can go out and play for the people."

4. OAG

OAG, also spelled O@G, also known as Old Automatic Garbage or Orang Asia Genius (Genius Asians), is a Malaysian pop and alternative rock band. The band, formed in 1992, was one of the first English language alternative rock bands in Malaysia to get huge attention from mainstream music listeners. The current line-up of the band is Muhammad Radhi Razali (vocals), Qi Razali (drums), Muhamad Nizam (guitar), Nazrin Zabidi (bass guitar), and Izmer Khasbullah (keyboard).

The band is well known for breaking the mainstream mold of Malay rock and pop at that time, pushing the alternative genre and underground spirit into commercial media such as radio and television. The 60's TV video clip was a landmark success in a new direction of music video for the country, and becomes one of the most recognisable songs ever in indie/underground circuits (next to Butterfingers' Nicotine and Vio-Pipe)

5. Bunkface

Bunkface is a Malaysian rock band from Malaysia formed in 2006. The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Sam (Shamsul Anuar), bass guitarist Youk (Farouk Jaafar), and lead guitarist Paan (Ahmad Farhan). The name Bunkface was suggested by Biak (former drummer) which was influenced by the Sum 41 song titled "Crazy Amanda Bunkface". Popular songs by Bunkface include Silly Lily, Situasi, Revolusi, Prom Queen, Through My Window, Ekstravaganza, Rentak Laguku, Malam Ini Kita Punya, Darah Muda and Masih Di Sini . Their fanbase is called "Bunkers"
