Malaysia starts AFF Suzuki Cup With A Win

Phnom Penh: Norshahrul Idlan Talaha scored a lovely header in the first half to grant Malaysia its first win in their first match against Cambodia in Olympic Stadium, here yesterday.

However, the host started the game aggressively in the first 20 minutes but they failed to produce at least a goal.

The first on target chance for Malaysia came from Zaquan Adha but his shot was saved by Cambodian goalkeeper, Um Vichet.

The newly awarded the Most Valuable Player in the Malaysia League in 2018, Safawi Rashid almost broke the deadlock after his powerful shot hit the post.

Couple minutes later, Gambia-born naturalised player Mohamadou Sumareh made an amazing pass to Safawi, who passed to Zaquan who then crossed perfectly for Norshahrul to head home for Malaysia to lead 1-0 at half-time.

Malaysia did try to score in the second half the the chances were stopped by Cambodian team and the match ended 0-1 as Tan Cheng Hoe’s side picked up three points.

For the next game in the AFF Suzuki Cup, Malaysia will take on Laos next at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Nov 12.
