Malaysia will not ratify ICERD.

Putrajaya: The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) will not be ratified by the newly elected Pakatan Harapan government, according to Prime Minister's Office.

Instead, the government will continue to defend the Federal Constitution which contains a social contract that has been agreed by all races during the formation of the country, based on media statement made by PMO today.

The ICERD is a United Nations convention which commits its members to the elimination of racial discrimination and the promotion of understanding among all races.

However, by ratifying ICERD, it will bring a huge backlash from the malays but it also will get negative feedback from non malays if the government straight away said ICERD is unacceptable here.
PKR De Facto leader, Anwar Ibrahim said, in order to solve this issue, government will postpone this issue in order to give some room for other important matters.
Several parties have vocally opposed ICERD, saying that it contravened the Federal Constitution, particularly Article 153, which touches on the special rights of the Malays and the bumiputra community in the country.
