Lake of Pregnant Maiden ( Tasik Dayang Bunting)

    by Firdaus Ehsan

Dayang Bunting is the second biggest island of 99 islands in the Langkawi cluster. It is offshore and south of the main island and is easily accessible by boat. So why is it so famous? The literal meaning of the name is' Pregnant Maiden Island'. And it has a beautiful large freshwater lake (called Lake Guillemard) surrounded by dense rainforest hills. The lake is also known as Pregnant Maiden Lake.

Legend has it that a man named Mat Teja met at the lake and fell in love with Princess Mambang Sari. They finally got married and a son was born by the princess. They didn't live long, however, and soon died. After they had reconciled with their misfortune, they decided to lay their son in the lake's water and let him rest peacefully. The graceful princess also blessed all women who were struggling to conceive a child. They would be fertile when they dip into the lake's waters.

Although not scientifically proven, this remains a strong belief in the local population. To add to the mystery surrounding the island and the lake, if you look at the hills that form the lake's background, it looks as if a woman is lying on her back and the belly is bubbling like a pregnant woman 's. An incredible thing about the lake is that it is a freshwater lake, although it is very close to the sea and is separated only by a strip of rocks. Once you reach the island, there is a narrow jetty and a narrow concrete path leading through the forest to the hills.

After about 10 minutes of climbing along the hillside steps, there are about 100 steps leading down to the beautiful lake on the other side of the mountain. There are deep blue waters on the lake. When you walk the path, beware of the monkeys. They usually do not harm you or attack you. If you carry food or packets, however, monkeys will probably pounce and snatch away. Don't bring food or drinks with you or try feeding the monkeys. They may still curiously look at you, but they won't create any problems. The lake and its environs form part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park. This is one of Langkawi 's three geoparks with large calcareous formations, marbles, and unique geological features. There are several caves in the park. In fact, the lake itself came from a large underwater cave, whose surface collapsed and was later filled.

The lake is wonderful for swimming. However, there are designated swimming areas( pontoons). Watch the depth, however. The average depth is approximately 10 meters and no shallow area. It's not intended for novices. There are no rooms to change. So, if you plan to swim, come in with a swimsuit and wear towels. If you're not sure, take a life jacket from the lake stall and float around. The stall also sells gift items and other souvenirs. The lake's water is not affected by seawater and is, therefore, suitable for swimming.  However, it may not be very clear.

You can also take a solar paddle boat or a kayak for hire and boat around the picturesque lake. Mangrove swamps surround the island's perimeter and the lake. We love the solar paddle boats because you don't tire when you boat around. The view of the hills around the lake is fantastic. ) Close to the stall, a separate water area has large number of catfish. Dip your legs, immerse yourself in the panoramic views and enjoy a natural fish spa on your legs for a few minutes. It's a wonderful feeling!. There is a boardwalk around the lake (around half way). Take a walk along this path and from different points enjoy the magnificent view of the lake.

Admission Fees
Entry fee for visitors (RM5 for adults and RM3 for children) has been introduced. No entry fee for Langkawi residents though.
